Joanne Wall commenced work as the Carlow Sports Inclusion Disability Officer in October 2010.
The SIDO Initiative was established in 2008 under the umbrella of County Carlow Sports Partnership and has the overall aim of increasing participation of people with disabilities in sport and recreational activity. A main element of the SIDO role is to work in partnership with sport and recreation clubs and facilities, disability service providers, national governing bodies of sport and people with disabilities to promote ongoing participation in sport and recreation.
The ultimate outcome is to promote ongoing participation and create an inclusive sporting environment where everyone is welcomed and respected irrespective of ability.
Background
In 2006, The Dormant Accounts earmarked 2 million Euro nationally for projects which address the imbalance in opportunities for people with physical, learning and sensory disabilities to participate in sport and physical activity. The Irish Sports Council, in collaboration with the network of Local Sports Partnerships identified the need to appoint a dedicated Sports Inclusion Disability Officers ( SIDO ) at county level in order to address current gaps in provision in sport and recreation for this target group.
Local Sports Partnerships and Local Authorities made applications to Dormant Accounts for funding towards the employment of SIDOs. County Carlow Sports Partnership is among 21 other sports partnerships that were successful in its funding bid.
