Go For Life

Participation Programmes

Go for Life programme image.Go for Life is a programme that aims to involve more older adults in all aspects of physical activity more often. It encourages older adults to not only participate but also plan and lead sport and physical activity within their own groups.

County Carlow Sports Partnership in conjunction with Age and Opportunity and the Health Service Executive deliver physical activity leaders workshops locally. The aim of these workshops is to provide information, ideas and skills to leaders so that they can implement programmes to involve older adults in physical activity. Leaders tend to be members of community groups like active retirement associations or clubs.

Programme Summary

There are two Go for Life programmes. To date over 1000 people have attended the physical activity leaders workshops nationwide.

  1. Active living aims to get more people involved in health enhancing physical activity. The programme is implemented in partnership with the HSE.
  2. Sport participation aims to increase participation rates in sport by older people. It is intended that physical activity leaders will be trained locally and will then in turn promote participation in sport amongst the older people in their communities.

Go for Life, as well as increasing the numbers of older people taking part in sport also increases the number of older people actually leading sport.
